The compact crossover SUV market has been heating up for some time now as more buyers are wanting the comfort, fuel-efficiency, and driving characteristics of a four-door sedan combined with the versatility and convenience of a sport utility vehicle. The all-new, 2016 Mazda CX-3 is designed to satisfy the public’s increasing demand for a small SUV that doesn’t sacrifice quality, performance, or practicality when compared to larger SUVs. The new CX-3 is slated to go on sale in Japan sometime this year, with a firm U.S. release date still forthcoming.
Redefining the crossover segment
Sharing many of the same design cues as the popular Mazda2 Hatchback, the 2016 CX-3 is smaller than its CX-5 crossover stable mate. At 168.3 in. long, 69.5 in. wide, and 61 in. tall, the CX-3 is highly maneuverable, yet surprisingly roomy. It is the fifth vehicle to share Mazda’s next-generation SKYACTIV Technology, which combines a number of advanced engineering features, such as low-friction, higher-compression engines, to achieve better fuel economy while maintaining spirited performance.
Motivating the new CX-3 is a fuel-efficient, yet powerful, 2.0 liter inline four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can opt for either front-wheel or Mazda’s next-generation all-wheel-drive, which incorporates active torque coupling for superior stability and drivability. The vehicle’s driving dynamics are an expression of Mazda’s “Jinba-Ittai” driving experience, which means “horse and rider are one.” It is the pursuit of connecting the will of the driver with the mechanics of the vehicle for an unmatched driving experience that is confident, assured, and responsive.
The soul of intelligent design
Another important Japanese philosophy that is incorporated throughout the new 2016 CX-3 is Mazda’s “KODO-Soul of Motion” design. It embodies the expression of life that flows organically from the vehicle to create a sensation of harmony both inside and out. The CX-3’s proportions have been meticulously crafted to remove any unnecessary elements for a refined and sculpted exterior style that exudes energy and purpose.
Similarly, the CX-3’s well-thought-out interior features an abundance of high-quality materials and painstakingly created information and control systems designed for ultimate ease-of-use. This is in keeping with Mazda’s “human-centric” engineering approach which strives to place the driver in total control. This is accomplished by using a “heads-up” cockpit design and “Active Driving Display” combined with a centrally mounted seven-inch pop-up color display that controls a variety of functions. This includes “Mazda Connect,” an integrated “infotainment” system that combines Internet connectivity with hands-free Bluetooth phone operation and text messaging, as well as Internet radio and other features all controlled by a large knob in the center console. Other key controls are mounted on the car’s comfortable three-spoke steering wheel. Oversized knobs positioned in the center stack right above the shifter control the HVAC functions.
Making Safety a Priority
Safety is always a top consideration at Mazda, and the new CX-3 is an excellent example of Mazda’s unwavering commitment to surrounding driver and passengers with the latest in cutting-edge safety advancements. These include i-ACTIVESENSE (which incorporates radar technology to alert drivers of potential risks), numerous airbags, and a high-strength body cage designed to absorb and dissipate impact forces. Additionally, the CX-3 features the world’s first front-wheel, slip-warning detection system. It’s designed to monitor and predict a driver’s intentions, adjusting to constantly changing driving conditions.
The all-new 2016 Mazda CX-3 is a stylish, sophisticated, practical, fuel-efficient, and superbly engineered compact crossover that’s due to arrive at U.S. Mazda dealerships in the near future. Stay tuned to Eastside Mazda for the latest updates.
